No Mail For More Than 16 Months For Northeast El Paso Man

POSTED: 5:51 pm MDT April 7, 2008
UPDATED: 9:16 pm MDT April 7, 2008

Delos Bates tells KFOX he hasn't seen a bill in the mail for more than a year. Like most people, Bates checks his mail everyday, but for the last 16 months he's been getting nothing but advertisements. "I'm getting all of the junk mail, but none of my bills," Bates said. He went on to say," I haven't been getting my mail for the last 16 months--my electric or my gas. He said without his bills in the mail he has to call both the electric and the gas company to get his balance.

"The first question I ask them is, 'Have you mailed my bill yet?' and they will go on the computer with all my information and tell me exactly what day it was mailed out," Bates said.

After Bates stopped getting his mail, he went to the Sunrise Post Office. They told him they would look into the situation. When KFOX got involved, Dinah Ross, a spokesperson for USPS, issued this statement: "After investigating this situation, we discovered that mail was accumulating in the apartment mailbox of the customer. The letter carrier contacted the apartment manager who said the customer had moved and left no forwarding address. At that point, we had no choice but to return mail to the sender."

Bates makes sure he checks his mail everyday, and isn't sure of what the post office is referring to. "I think that is kinda strange. I work for the school district. Sometimes I get home at like 4 or 5. I go straight to my mailbox right after I get home and there is nothing in there, so if they delivered it, where is it at?" he said.

If you have problems with your mail you are asked to call 1-800-ASK-USPS or you can always go to local post office. As for Bates, a spokesperson for the post office tells KFOX they are working to correct the situation.
