Family Of Slain El Paso Women Fear Justice May Be Denied

Ruben Lopez appeared in federal court Thursday, where he was told he will soon be extradited to Mexico for the killings of two El Paso women in September 1996.

Sophia Parker has waited 12 years for justice in the murders of her mother, Rita, and aunt Victoria. Both El Paso women were kidnapped and taken to Juarez in September 1996, where Mexican authorities said they were killed execution-style by three men, including Ruben Lopez. Lopez was recently arrested on marijuana charges and allegedly confessed to his role in the killings, but even though Lopez and the victims are American, he will soon be extradited to Mexico where the crime was committed.

"We want to be assured that they are going to pay for what they've done, and not get off through some kind of a technicality over there or because of possible corruption," Parker said.

The FBI sent KFOX this statement: "The FBI has an open kidnapping investigation on this case but we have issued no arrest warrants. However, the murders occurred in Mexico, which is beyond the jurisdiction of the FBI or other US law enforcement agencies. The Mexican government has secured provisional arrest warrants for the two men who they allege committed the murders in their country."

Sophia and her family understand this is a step toward healing, but fear moving the case south of the border could be a step in the wrong direction.

"We want justice to be served, but unfortunately, the United States is not going to do anything about it," Parker said.

Lopez's cousin Richard will also be extradited for murder charges. Both men will be sent to San Antonio for an extradition hearing.
