Violence Invokes Mixed Emotions In Palomas, Mexico

Border Patrol agents at the Columbus, N.M. crossing say they wouldn't recommend Americans cross into Mexico until some of the violence there calms down.

Tourists said the violence has calmed slightly the last two days, but they feel crossing into Palomas is a go-at-your-own-risk journey.

Border agents said in the past few months, violence and deaths may have escalated, but tourists have not been targets. However, they still warn about the potential of danger.

“The violence that we have seen so far has been pretty much in general terms towards each other. That is between the smuggling organizations or the drug trafficking organizations, but bullets have no names,” said John Nieves, Field Operations Supervisor at the Deming, N.M. station.

Agents said reports indicate an increase of military personnel in Palomas from a fort in Juarez.

Tourists have heard about several missing residents, some even killed. This week, four bodies were found burned 30 miles southwest of Palomas.

“We started hearing the news about the time we hit Las Cruces. We stayed in Deming a couple of days before we scouted this out a little, but came down and then we didn't feel too uncomfortable,” said tourist Everett Pace from Louisiana.

When he heard about more people missing, he said he was a little more reluctant.

“I think I might not have come over," said Pace.

Others have been warned before and still take a chance. The Ramsdales of Alpine, Texas, have a son who is a law enforcement officer. Their son is apprehensive when his parents head to Mexico.

“He gets a little bit nervous when we go over there. I wouldn't go wandering,” said Kathy Ramsdale.

Border Patrol officers have the same suggestion.

“If you're not familiar with Palomas, I would abstain from that area just for now until things get resolved," said Nieves.

We spoke with business owners and residents of Palomas as well. They say they haven't noticed too much violence immediately at the border.
