SOCORRO, Texas -- A man wanted on a U.S. Marshals warrant was arrested at a motel. Police were originally called to his house on a domestic disturbance call Tuesday.Benjamin Romero, 48, who was wanted by U.S. Marshals on a charge of violation of his parole, was arrested at a motel located at 7729 Alameda Road Tuesday.A Socorro neighborhood was evacuated early Tuesday morning while several law enforcement agencies swarmed the area around the 10000 block of Valle Del Mar Drive.Socorro police responded to a family fight at 10481 Valle Del Mar Drive at about 3:30 a.m. Officers said the fight between a father and his 19-year-old son escalated. The son claims the father held a knife to his throat and threatened him. Some neighbors told KFOX they were awakened by the screams. They said the men took the fight outside, and an off-duty El Paso police officer who lives in the neighborhood broke up the fight. The 19-year-old, his mother and siblings were not hurt. Witnesses told responding Socorro police officers the man was last seen going back into his home.Officers called the El Paso County Sheriff's Office and Border Patrol for backup when they could not make contact with the man. Officials were not sure if he was inside because they said the back sliding door was open when they responded. At about 5 a.m. the SWAT team was also called out after family members told authorities the man had a loaded AK-47 and shotgun in the home. Officials said the man never threatened to use them, but they were of concern for neighbors and officers who were surrounding the home.Armed members of the U.S. Marshal's Office also staged around the home for hours, while SWAT members used megaphones and yelled, "Romero, come out with your hands up!"Officials said the man was recently released from jail on a drug-related case, and is wanted by the U.S. Marshals for violation of his probation.Just before 7 a.m. officers went door to door alerting neighbors of the situation and evacuated them as a precaution. Minutes later, the SWAT team made its way into the home, but investigators said the man in question was not inside. However, they were able to retrieve an AK-47 and shotgun from the home, which did not belong to Romero.Complete coverage will be on KFOX News at Nine.
