KFOX Exclusive: Employees At Elder Care Facility Speak Out

Royal Estates of El Paso offers both assisted and independent living. But some employees told KFOX there are residents with far greater needs than for whom the facility is licensed to care.

"There are some residents there with bedsores that are so severe that when you move them, they scream. I wouldn't want my parent to be laying on that bed with a bedsore. And instead of it healing, it's getting worse," a current employee, who wanted to remain anonymous, said.

Royal Estates said its facility is deficiency free and follows the guidelines of the Department of Human Services, meaning none of its residents require skilled nursing.

"We have really happy residents, happy family members. We take care of our our residents; we're very proud of that," executive director Isabel Rodriguez said.

Attorney Stephanie Townsend Allala said most seniors at assisted living facilities eventually need greater care, which is why it's important for facilities to always be on the lookout if the needs of their residents are being neglected.

"They are charged with ensuring that they are able to meet the needs of whoever is in their facility. They are the ones who need to monitor and transfer, and try to make changes when those changes are needed," Townsend Allala said.
