County Commissioner Releases Statement In Ongoing Investigation

As he prepares for a runoff election to try to save his job, El Paso County Commissioner Luis Sarinana read a statement Thursday about the ongoing federal investigation of public corruption.

As KFOX reported, Sarinana was one of three county commissioners whose offices were searched by FBI agents last May.

After El Paso attorney Raymond Telles pleaded guilty last week to fraud charges, court records were released showing Telles told federal prosecutors two current members of El Paso County Commissioners' Court agreed to accept money for their votes.

Thursday, Sarinana responded. "I took office in November 2006 and since taking office, I have not engaged, talked or met with Mr. Telles nor was I offered money for my vote on Commissioners' Court by Mr. Telles,” said Sarinana.

KFOX cameras were there last May, when federal agents raided Sarinana's office along with the offices of County Judge Anthony Cobos and Commissioner Miguel Teran.

In the months since then, seven people have pleaded guilty to various federal charges related to public corruption.

They include a former county commissioner, an El Paso school board trustee and a former city representative.

Now, with Telles' guilty plea, two current commissioners are implicated in the scandal, though it's not yet known who.

Sarinana's adamant it's not him. "I also want El Pasoans to know the bribery allegations have nothing whatsoever to do with me, period,” said Sarinana.

"It's very difficult to get business done right now,” said County Commissioner Dan Haggerty.

Earlier this week, Haggerty told KFOX the public corruption investigation hangs like a cloud over all local public officials and the companies with whom they work. And as it drags on, he said it's like a poorly written soap opera that seems to have no end.

"And me, one of the players in the big picture here.... maybe, that I could make some sense out of any of this, like, oh, of course, I knew it, I knew it, I knew he was related to him and he's doing this. But I can't put any of this together,” said Haggerty.

Haggerty hopes there's some resolution to the federal investigation soon, a hope shared by Sarinana, who faces an uphill battle for re-election.

"I hope the U.S. Attorney will move with due speed to resolve guilt or innocence consistent with due process of law," said Sarinana.

Neither the FBI nor the U.S. attorney's office will comment on their ongoing investigation or when it might end.

After reading his statement, Sarinana took no questions from reporters.
