Update: Radium Springs Brush Fire

Posted: 5:40 pm MDT March 18, 2008Updated: 5:30 pm MDT March 20, 2008

The cause of Tuesday’s brush fire in the Radium Springs area remains under investigation. The fire claimed one home at 23420 N.M. 185, a cinder-block and wood-frame home. No one was home at the time, and Doña Ana County fire officials have not yet made contact with the owner(s). No injuries were reported.

Approximately 100 people sought temporary shelter and/or meals at a makeshift Red Cross shelter opened late in the afternoon at the Radium Springs Community Center.

Approximately 300 meals were served to evacuees and emergency responders before the shelter was shut down at approximately 9 p.m.

Only one family of four was placed in a hotel for the night.

Several crews and assorted equipment remains on scene, including three Forest Service brush trucks, two Bureau of Land Management fire engines and a water tanker from the Doña Ana Volunteer Fire Department. Bulldozers have been pulled from the area.

Ryan Whitaker, BLM field fire supervisor, remains in the role of Incident Commander in Radium Springs. A state fire inspector is expected on the site later today to assist with the investigation.

There were no livestock losses reported, although several horses were released from a stall by Doña Ana County fire crews, because the horses were in the path of the fire.

A few remaining hotspots inside the burned area are being monitored by fire crews through the day. Some power lines from El Paso Electric were damaged, and repairs are underway.
