Neighborhood With No Postal Service

UPDATED: 10:14 pm MST March 7, 2008

They are beautiful new homes in Northeast El Paso on Charles Reynolds Lane, but something is missing; You don't see a single mailbox in the neighborhood.

"The post office said we had to wait for the mailboxes to be put in, and it's up to the developers to do that. Well we called the developers, and they said to call the post office," said homeowner Tony Keasler. "We called the post office, and they said, well, you gotta call the developers."

Ever since Keasler moved into his new home, he has had to drive 10 miles to pick up his mail.

"And the gas prices, having to go back and forth between the post office and here, that kind of gets to me too," said Keasler.

KFOX contacted the U.S. Postal Service Friday to find out why mailboxes haven't been built. In a statement written to KFOX, Dennis Walsh with the U.S. Postal Service said, "When a new housing development is planned, it is up to the developer to contact the local postmaster to determine the mode of delivery and location of mailboxes."

So KFOX called the developer, Zia Homes. They said the U.S. Postal Service simply decided to stop building mailboxes. KFOX found out that in the first phase of the same development, there were mailboxes built, and the developer said it was done by the U.S. Postal Service.

For Keasler, the frustrating part is not that he doesn't have a mailbox, but that he can't get a straight answer.

"The fact that I can't find out who is supposed to put the mailboxes in, that's the big problem with this," said Keasler.

An official with Zia Homes said they are in negotiations to try and figure out how to get mail service to these homeowners.
