Five Car Accident Kills One On I-10

Shattered glass and twisted metal spread across I-10 West and Mcrae at the scene of a fatal accident. It happened at 10:20 p.m. Thursday, police said.

Investigators said a Pontiac GTO and a Nissan 300Z were racing on I-10 when the Pontiac hit a Nissan Sentra. The Sentra had three people inside, one of them died. The other two victims were taken to the hospital, one of them with serious injuries.

Police said the driver of Nissan 300Z was also injured in the crash. The driver of the Pontiac was not hurt and was held for questioning. Police said the driver was not arrested and is not facing charges at this time.

"Right now there is a suspicion of alcohol possibly playing a part," said El Paso Police spokesman Javier Sambrano.

I-10 West at Mcrae was shut down for more than 8 hours, forcing cars to use Gateway West.

Police warned drivers that the freeway is not a racetrack.

"It's just plainly stupid for anybody to be getting on a roadway and attempt to race anybody," Sambrano said.
