EL PASO, Texas -- If you’re heading to Mexico anytime soon, get ready for a slow down when crossing over from El Paso. This week El Paso police and officials from the El Paso County Tax Assessor - Collector’s office are cracking down on fraudulent insurance papers and stolen cars.Officers with both organizations have set up checkpoints at all border crossings including Bridge of the Americas and Paso Del Norte. They are checking registration, license plates, and for outstanding warrants."When vehicles are stolen, obviously in El Paso, within five minutes they're in Mexico"Officers are targeting cars that are stolen the most, including Ford trucks like F-150s, F-250s Chevy Silverado pick-up trucks and the Dodge Ram.Among some documents officers are looking for are registration and proof of insurance. They will also make sure drivers don't have any outstanding warrants for their arrest.Officials say car thieves are getting sophisticated, by switching vehicle identification numbers and then trying to legally register the vehicles in Texas."All they want is to be able to have a fleet of cars that are registered and then use these cars for what we refer to as gateway to other crimes," said Marquez.Marquez also said that the more stolen cars the higher automobile insurance premiums. Some drivers say that's a good reason to use their breaks."It's alright everybody's got to have insurance and everything so I'm for it," saidEl Paso police said last year, 3,049 cars were stolen.
