EL PASO, Texas -- The Socorro Independent School District is looking at a possible schedule adjustment, which would change how long students take certain classes.

"Students would have a five-period day, as opposed to a four-period day," SISD Assistant Superintendent Holly Field said. The district would also modify the current yearlong schedule by limiting some classes to a single semester, which many worry would hurt students in fine arts, athletics and other electives. And since students have been left in the dark, some are now ready to take drastic action -- similar to the infamous Montwood High School riots in January 2003.

"I received a text that said Montwood's going to have a riot to oppose the new schedule; that there's going to be walk-out. We've been hearing a lot of stuff like that," Montwood High School senior Elizabeth Ivey said.

And students are not the only ones upset. Teachers told KFOX they were told by principals in a meeting last week the change will be going in effect next year and not to tell anyone about it.

"They specifically told us it was a done deal, that there was not going to be any talk with the board or parents, that the superintendent had implemented this," a teacher who chose to remain anonymous said.

The district said this was not finalized and that it is "still having meetings to make sure everything's ironed out."

Regardless, the president of the Socorro Education Association believes the district should have shared the information with the public, long before considering any type of change.

"Any time that there's a major change in the ways our schools are run, I think it would behoove administration to get the community involved," Glenda Hawthorne said.
