RADIUM SPRINGS, N.M. -- The couple reporting a lack of a law enforcement response claims it has allowed a series of vandalisms to continue.

One couple filed a complaint against the sheriff's department after someone shot at their home and work vehicle with paint balls.

Joaquin Villegas said he heard the paintball gun. He then followed the suspect’s car himself, because he said it takes too long for deputies to respond.

“Sometimes it takes them up to two hours before they get here,” said Villegas.

He followed the car to the nearby border patrol checkpoint, where he drove in front of the car and blocked it. That’s when he asked Border Patrol agents to detain the men. Villegas said he called the deputy to the checkpoint, but when the deputy arrived, the deputy let the men go.

So he and his wife called 911 again. This time he asked for a case number because they were upset the deputy let the men leave.

“They see that nothing ever happens the first time or the second so they can do whatever,” said Joaquin’s wife, Sandra Villegas.

Earlier Sunday evening, when she called 911, she said an officer called back asking if them if they wanted a deputy to come out to their home.

“I told them I'm not an officer but I would think that's what you would do is come and see the damages,” said Villegas.

The Villegas also said the sheriff's department rarely responds to them, like when they tried to report a theft or people setting the trash containter on fire.

This weekend other buildings were vandalized too.

“They told me to go out and try to remove the paint off of the building and then if the paint was removable that it wasn't considered vandalism,” said Jenny Creager, who operates the Radium Springs post office that got hit.

The sheriff's department said a deputy did respond and a report was filed. Officers said they can not comment further because of the personnel complaint.
