Florida Church Encourages Members To Have Sex

You may hear a hallelujah in church or amen, but the word sex is hardly ever mentioned. In the Tampa, Fla. suburb of Ybor City, the pastor of Relevant Church is doing more than talking about the taboo subject. He's telling his married parishioners to have sex for 30 days straight.

"I think he's crazy," said Ted Gabry, who lives in east El Paso.

It's called the 30 Day Sex Challenge and it encourages married couples to have more sex to rekindle the romance in their relationships. The church's Web site states that people aren't having sex enough and that it could lead to problems.

Relevant Church pastor Paul Wirth said he's found scriptures in the Bible that promote sex in a marriage. Here in the Sun City, no one is saying sex is a bad thing, but 30 days straight is a stretch.

"I never heard of that! Does it work?” laughed Marianne Lee.

"So, 30 days straight. It kind of wears somebody out I guess," said Willis Morrison. Morrison said the challenge would either bond a marriage together or break it apart.

"Some people might, just because it would give them an excuse to have more sex. But personally, I wouldn't," said Tanya Henry.

"I think sex in a marriage is good,” said Stephanie Brown. “But it's not everything."

Senior Pastor at Word of Life Church in east El Paso, Tom Brown, said the idea gets people talking but it’s no way solve any marriage problem.

"Take a time and fast and pray,” said Brown. “Learn to deny your flesh and then maybe abstain for a short time, not too long."

Brown said after couples go through fasting and praying their relationship will strengthen.

Relevant Church is asking singles to not have sex for 30 days. There is place set up on the church Web site for couples to blog about their journey and there’s also a guide.
