EL PASO, Texas -- The can looks innocent enough with a friendly cartoon of Mario from Super Mario Brothers on the front. But when Nicole Viallalobos' husband bought the drink for her 6-year-old son, she had a problem."He came home. Came running in. He was excited. He was like,'Mom, Mom can I drink this Power Up?' and I said, 'I don't know. Let me see. What it is it? He said, 'It is an energy drink.' I said, 'You are 6 . You don't need an energy drink. Let me see that.' So he shows me this and it has a picture of Super Mario Brothers on it and I was like, 'They are making energy drinks for kids now?'" Villalobos said. The energy drink warns consumers it is not made for kids, but only in fine print at the bottom of the can."I was just so upset because it is obviously marked to children. There are not many adults who are going to be like, 'Oh I need a Super Mario Brothers drink, you know?" Villalobos said. Most parents we talked to agreed."They advertise with logos, with cartoons and I don't think that is right. They want it then parents have to fight that debate weather to do it or not, "one mother told us.Jose Loera is the father of two. He said, "It says energy drink. Adults should know what they are getting."Doctors say if a child were to consume an energy drink like Power Up they may get an upset stomach or become irritable. Other side effects can be as bad as changes in blood pressure and heart problems.KFOX tried to contact Boston American Corporation for comment. They did not return our e-mails.
