CHAPARRAL, New Mexico -- The smell of smoke was in the air hours after a fire charred a mobile home on Mesia Street in Chaparral. It started just after 2 a.m. Thursday. Rachel Gonzalez is the single mother of four children who lived in home. She said they have nothing.
"I'm still in shock right now," Gonzalez said. "When it hits me it will it me hard."
Volunteer firefighters from Farsouth and Chaparral fire departments put out the flames just before 5 a.m. Investigators think the fire started with electrical wires or a wood-burning stove in the kitchen.
The family was not in the home at the time of the fire. No one was hurt.
Neighbors sent their regards.
"I'm very sorry for them," said Angelica Diaz. "We're a good community. I'm sure they're gonna get help."
Gonzalez said although she lost everything, she is grateful that her family was not harmed.
