Not all holiday food is bad. Some of it can be good for you.

The next time you head to the grocery store this holiday season, don't be afraid to pick up some tasty classics.

Eliezer Ben-Joseph, a naturopathic doctor, said, “There are some very good foods that you can eat.”

He said some of our favorite holiday foods are also very healthy. For example, cranberry sauce is high in vitamin C and contains chemicals that help with circulation.

Another smart choice is dark chocolate.

Ben-Joseph said, “It is high in minerals and flavanoids, and you'll find in studies now that people who are eating dark chocolate, their blood pressure is going back to normal.

“I had no idea that anything like that was good for you.” said Noe Vargas, a West El Paso resident. “The only thing I know is good for you is for your taste buds. They're really good for that.”

Another holiday favorite that doctors recommend is sweet potatoes.

Ben-Joseph said, “A yam or a sweet potato. It's one of the highest anti-oxidants. It's a root vegetable. It's very high in beta carotene. It's full of minerals and it's actually a very healthy food.”

To maintain a food's healthiness, don't smother it in butter.

And try to always cook your meals using low-fat ingredients.

West El Paso Resident Celeste Carr said, “I think it's a must for a healthy lifestyle, and the sooner we make that adjustment, the better.”

Nutritionists say coffee is healthy too. The caffeine drink also contains flavanoids and anti-oxidants.
