Crash In Hatch Kills Two

Posted: 7:12 pm MST November 23, 2007Updated: 9:07 pm MST November 23, 2007

By the look of the crash, it was easy to understand why residents in Hatch, N.M. were shaken up Friday.

Around 9 a.m. four people riding in a Dodge Dakota on State Road 26 collided with an oncoming maintenance vehicle. Police said they were on their way back from a Black Friday sale in Deming when the driver fell asleep and drifted over the center line.

"I'm horrified. I mean it's awful, especially right after the holiday. We're a small community down here, so whenever something like this does happen, we all feel it," Hatch resident Victoria Franzoy said.

"By the time she realized there was oncoming traffic, it was too late. That's when she made impact," New Mexico State Police officer Thomas Vitale said.

The 23-year-old driver, Maria Soto, and her 3-year-old daughter were airlifted to Thomason Hospital with serious injuries. Maria's cousin, 19-year-old Julia, and Julia's 1-year-old baby boy died at the scene. The 63-year-old driver of the maintenance vehicle received only minor injuries.

The crash shut down traffic in the area for about an hour Friday, a sobering reminder to drivers that tragedy on the road can happen to anyone.

"Any time a baby and mother get killed, what can you say? It's a tragedy," Hatch resident Charlie Thorn said.
