Wounded Soldier Returns To El Paso

Adrian's back in town checking out his new home and boasting his new skills.

Adrian Garcia got to check out his brand new home for the first time Friday morning.

A national charity callled Rebuilding Together provided the funds, while local volunteers built the home, which comes with features specially made to accommodate Adrian, like countertops at wheelchair level.

“It's a big weight off my shoulders knowing that everything's a lot easier to do and y'know everything's at my height," said Adrian Garcia.

"It looks really nice. I didn't expect it to be like this. I had something else in my mind. It looks really, really nice," said Adrian’s mother, Lourdes Garcia.

Adrian also arrived home with good news about his rehabilitation at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio. He brought pictures showing off his new prosthetic legs. He can already stand in them and has taken his first steps since losing both legs in Iraq last March.

"I don't know, I can't explain it, it's life-changing. Y'know like to be standing again after being in a wheelchair for so long. Y'know, it's just mind-boggling," said Garcia.

Adrian, a former Ysleta High School basketball star, admits one of his biggest adjustments is getting used to being shorter than he once was, in his prosthetic legs.

"I shouldn't be, but I am a little embarrassed. Y'know going from looking like Chewbacca to Yoda. It's a funny transformation because I used to be 6-foot-2 and now I'm so, I'm so short," said Garcia.

Adrian's making fast progress and hopes to be walking easily and out of rehabilitation by next summer.

He said the community's support has been a key to his recovery.

"The support really does help me out and I can prove it in the fact that I'm already standing and walking, all thanks to the people of El Paso," said Garcia.
