Fire Damages Far East El Paso Home

Firefighters quickly put out the flames that consumed part of a two-story house on Sun Terrace Avenue Sunday morning.

Neighbors called 911.

“I saw black smoke coming from the air conditioner and I came out to make sure nobody was inside,” neighbor Carlos Escobar said. “I knocked on the door. Nobody was answering. I heard the fire alarms or the smoke alarms going on inside.”

No one was inside at the time, and fire crews arrived before flames could spread to the rest of the house.

Some parts of the home are now a total loss.

The Red Cross has stepped in to help the family.

“We'll be providing them with monetary assistance for clothing, linen and bedding and also for food,” said Tony Escobedo of the El Paso Red Cross.

While the cause of the fire has yet to be determined, officials hope the fire reminds everyone to always be careful before stepping outside.

“It's just very important that before you leave the house, you make sure all appliances are not still plugged in,” said Greg Burns of the El Paso Fire Department.

The fire caused $80,000 worth of damage.

People interested in making a donation to the family can call the El Paso Red Cross at 915-592-0208.
