Parents Urged To Take Part In Teens' Driving Education

Studies show teens are more at risk of getting in a crash because they tend to speed more than older drivers.

Teens also have the lowest rate of seat belt use and become easily distracted by text messaging, cell phones or other passengers. Driving at night also increases the risk of crashing. Teens also tend to underestimate hazardous or dangerous road conditions.

Manny Mercado, 22 of El Paso said, “They (teens) drive pretty scary. I was riding with someone that was going way faster than they were supposed to.”

Adam Barraza, 18 of El Paso said, “I do agree, but we're prone to everything such as speed because we see all these movies like ‘The Fast and The Furious’ and like speed."

Texas and California have the highest rate of teens traffic related deaths.

Experts say to help reduce the risks, parents need to be involved in the learning process. Also both parents and teens should be aware of state requirements when it comes to teen drivers.
