Lee Trevino Construction Hurts Area Businesses

The city of El Paso said they have a good reason for the construction delays on Lee Trevino in east El Paso. They told KFOX the weather has kept construction workers off the job, and that's bad news for many businesses in the area, including the Golden Corral.

"Ever since they started construction, sales have been down from 35 to 45 percent," said Marty Murillo with Golden Corral.

The customers who did come to Golden Corral said the construction means getting there becomes a difficult task.

"It's aggravating because of the traffic, trying to get through Lee Trevino and the traffic is congested, and you don't see anybody working, what's going on?" said Arturo Alvarez, from east El Paso.

"It could be better without the Lee Trevino construction that's going on. I didn't want to get into an accident going through the little barrels," said Jaime Ortega, from the Lower Valley.

Murillo said with Golden Corral scraping to get by, it has an effect on his employees.

"I'm really frustrated when I have to come into the restaurant and send half of the employees back home," said Murillo.

Golden Corral fears that with the extra month delay, they are going to see more empty tables during their busiest hours.

"That probably will be between 100 and 150,000 sales, that's a big difference," said Murillo.

Some business owners complained they haven't seen anyone working at the construction site for the last two days, and the city said that's because they need the ground to be completely dry before they can lay down the concrete for the median, which they say is an upgrade from the asphalt the city originally was planning on using.
