After several recent cases of animal cruelty, activists want to take action.

Beginning this September, you can expect some new laws when it comes to your four-legged friends.

These laws intend to keep both pets and their owners safe.

Suzi Aaroson of West El Paso said, “It's going to help avoid animals starving and dying, and being mistreated."

The new laws focus on proper collars and leashes for dogs.

Some examples include not leaving your dogs unattended while their movement's limited, and not leaving your dogs out in severe weather such as extreme heat or freezing conditions.

Also, the new laws will outlaw any collar that can cause injury to your pets.
