Sheriff Plans Increased Community Policing In Anthony

Posted: 9:44 pm MDT July 17, 2007Updated: 2:25 pm MDT July 18, 2007

Dozens of Anthony residents crowded into the senior center Tuesday, as several others stood outside for a town meeting with the Dona Ana County Sheriffs Department.

The meeting was organized after several gang-related shootings and a recent stabbing in Anthony. The incidents prompted the sheriff to address the increasing violence with concerned residents.

"We're going to start beefing up the law enforcement presence in the town and we're going to start dealing more with the gangs specifically, and with gang related issues," said sheriff Todd Garrison.

Garrison said the department is currently working with nearby law enforcement agencies to help with community policing in hopes of cleaning up the streets.

The sheriff also announced plans to conduct a gang roundup within the county.
