Deming Feeling Business Boom After Filming Wraps

More than one week after filming wrapped on a major movie in Deming, businesses are still feeling the impact.

According to location manager for the Indiana Jones film, work on the film started approximately four months ago as crew worked on movie sets and made preparations. Filming lasted only about one week, but the impact it had on business is still being felt in the usually quiet city.

"We personally saw between 30 and 70 people a day, consisting of production and other staff, said Harold Richard, Las Palmas Italian Restaurant. "It was very good for us."

Location manager David Manzares said almost every business in town was impacted as cast and crew stayed in local hotels and ate and shopped in local businesses.

"We were pretty busy," said Stephanie Word, of the Holiday Inn. "We were booked almost every night."

Since Governor Bill Richardson took office, he's pushed a generous tax rebate on movie production. It has helped New Mexico's film industry reel in more than $50 million dollars in tax revenue. The state now ranks among the top in filming activity.

Sony Pictures Imageworks will also move a big piece of visual effects business to New Mexico, along with about 100 visual effects jobs.
