Wildlife Rescue Group Needs Space, Money

Last year the Chihuahuan Desert Wildlife Rescue group took in 3,250 wild birds and mammals. The voluntary group of six rehabilitated the animals and sent them back into the wild. They operate out of their own homes."The city gives us nothing. The state gives us nothing. I have probably put out of pocket over $20,000 in the last six years to do this," said Josie Karam, a rehabilitator."The problem is we don't have a central facility here in El Paso. We're hoping the city will donate us some land at Keystone Heritage Park. We're trying to get them donate it to us so we can build a facility there with a veterinarian, where volunteers can come in and help," said Karam.City Representative Beto O'Rourke, whose district includes Keystone Heritage Park, said he's willing to take suggestions from the group. He said although the park is city property, the city doesn't run it.For now, Karam has built several flying cages in her back yard using money from out-of-town donations, she said. Karam said one of the only local contributors is El Paso Electric that donated one of the flying cages. The facility takes up half an acre of Karam's property.Karam said she gives up her property, money, and time for a cause that affects everyone"Where there are a lot of birds there is a lot of growth of trees and grass, and weeds too. Those seeds are being spread by the bird. If we didn't have insectivorous to eat all the insects, and they eat hundreds a day, we would have tremendous insect problem," said Karam. To volunteer or donate money, call 772-6011 or 505-882-2910.
