Congress Decides Whether To Build More Fences
Apparently, the latest battleground over the issue of illegal immigration is one guy's basement. From his home computer, Demos Chrissos just put the finishing touches on a national ad campaign, asking senators to support a U.S. - Mexico border fence. The president already signed a law to build 370 miles of fencing, but Congress has yet to set aside money for it.Should they? You can probably guess what border fence supporter, Demos Chrissos, thinks."It's law. It's not an option. It's law. And they have to deliver on that promise if they expect the American public to listen to anything else they promise," said Chrissos. The U.S. House debates whether to "fund the fence" this week.Sources tell KFOX Team reporter Scott MacFarlane the bill will include as much as $1 billion for the project. The thing is, not everyone likes the idea.Opponents said it's a threat to the environment, the economy and U.S. - Mexican relations.Even Secretary of Homeland Security Michael Chertoff said, "In many border areas he'd prefer cameras, sensors, and so-called virtual fencing to 'real' fencing.""One size does not fit all. The lay of the land is different. The solution has to vary location to location," said Chertoff.
