Injured El Paso Soldier Begins Journey Home

An El Paso soldier who lost both his legs in Iraq just last month begins his journey home.

KFOX has learned that Adrian Garcia has left Walter Reed Hospital in Washington, and is now much closer to home, at Brooks Army Medical Center in San Antonio.

We talked with Private Garcia about how he's holding up.

He said he's gaining strength and that it's wonderful to finally be able to get out of his hospital bed and into a wheelchair.

But Garcia also said repeated surgeries have been an ordeal.

"It has taken its toll on me mentally. But I keep my head up and I keep my head up before and after every surgery. Like, going into surgery, I go in there with my head up high and coming out of surgery, no matter how much pain I have, I continue to have my head up high."

Also this week, before leaving Walter Reed, Adrian met most of the players on the Washington Nationals Baseball Team and met actor Gary Sinise, who played a disabled veteran in the movie, "Forrest Gump ."
