NMSU Officials Contact Students About Released Info

Officials at New Mexico State University are making contact with some of the thousands of students whose Social Security numbers were mistakenly posted on the school's Web site.

The students' information was accidently posted on the public site for two hours on April 5.

Information technology officials told KFOX they have e-mailed most of the students to let them know about the incident.

However, they said they don't suspect anyone misused the site.

"We see no evidence that somebody took a copy of that info to use it for something fraudulent, and if they did have malice in mind, they would have to find other info; for example, their date of birth or their address at home to combine that with the name of other information to find other financial bad things," said Michael Hites, Planning and Information Tech.

NMSU is converting some student information to be posted without Social Security numbers.

The conversion started last fall.
