Family Fears Contaminated Dog Biscuits Led To Dog's Death

April 6, 2007 -- A Northeast El Paso family is coping with the death of its pet of nine years. The Martinezes believe the dog biscuits they were feeding him are to blame. It was just a few days ago that Hunter became ill.
"We came home around 9:30. We noticed he had vomited, and we didn't know what was wrong with him and he was limping around," said Patrick Martinez.
Martinez said the veterinarian said Hunter's kidney was failing, which is the illness from which other pets nationwide affected by the food contamination have suffered. Patrick believes Pet Life dog biscuits by Sunshine Mills Inc. is what caused Hunter's death. He said his wife bought a bag last week.
Dr. Jorge Navar with All Star Animal Hospital said he's identified two pets affected by the recalled food.
"There's a couple we're treating right now with nutritional support for the kidneys, some of them IV fluids, special diet for the kidney," Navar said.
Twenty-two brands of Sunshine Mills dog biscuits were added to the pet food recall list because they contain wheat gluten tainted by melamine, a toxic chemical used to make plastics. Some of those include Nurture Chicken and Rice Biscuit and Ol' Roy Peanut Butter Biscuit. But this brand, Pet Life Multi-Flavor is not on the list.
The Martinezes are now worried about their other dogs. The recall list has been expanded several times, so they don't know what else will end up on the list.
"We don't know what to do anymore. We don't know what kind of food to buy. I don't want to lose my other dogs," said Martinez.
