March 29, 2007 -- Army Pvt. Adrian Garcia is recovering at Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington, D.C. At the age of 19, he's been to Iraq, severely injured and is alive to tell his story.
"Towards the end of our shift, we were rolling down the street and a rocket-propelled grenade hit the side of our vehicle. There was no initial blast. It blew into the vehicle and clipped my legs. I just remember falling and having the smell and taste of smoke and gas," said Garcia.
Garcia said his initial reaction was to get up and return fire. But he said he couldn't get up.
"I remember being dragged out of the humvee. I had all my clothes stripped off me. I remember I looked down, and that's when I realized I had no legs," said Garcia.
Last week, Garcia's mother told KFOX she felt her son was not prepared. But now, Garcia explained the training he received did help him.
"When I told her I was going to Iraq, I told her I didn't have much training. Before we left, they gave us three weeks of training that really did help us with our evaluation," said Garcia.
Garcia also talked about his opinion on the proposed troop withdrawal. He believes it's too late to withdraw troops.
"We, the U.S., have a duty to the people because I've seen cities. They're all collapsed, and they rely on the U.S. a lot," said Garcia.
Garcia's mother said he may be transferred to a hospital in San Antonio as early as Monday.
Rep. Silvestre Reyes went to visit Garcia on Thursday.
And President George W. Bush is expected to pay him a visit on Friday.
