Will Zoo Elephants Stay Or Go?
March 26, 2007 -- The Asian elephants Juno and Savannah are the reasons why a lot of people visit the El Paso Zoo. The elephants are one of the main attractions but one that's been controversial for the last two years.
"If they're not happy then take them," said Lower Valley resident, Blanca Garcia.
Animal activists have been pushing to remove Juno and Savannah from the El Paso Zoo. Some of the problems they've cited are lack of space and foot and joint problems.
Now, a Zoo Task Force has completed a report on recommendations regarding the elephants.
"We looked at everything from mission and master planning, space quality, our active management program, staffing and continuing education for staff members," said Zoo Director Steve Marshall.
Marshall wouldn't go into any details on what's in the report, but city Rep. Presi Ortega said he heard positive things about it. KFOX called every representative to find out how they may vote on Tuesday.
Reps. Presi Ortega, Steve Ortega, Ann Morgan Lilly and Alexandro Lozano all said if the report recommends that the elephants stay they will vote for them to stay. Rep. Eddie Holguin said he will vote for the elephants to stay especially after the city has invested a lot of money in the zoo.
Reps. Susie Byrd and Melina Castro didn't return our phone call and Rep. Beto O'Rourke said he's got concerns.
"The last briefing we got in 2006 told us to increase the size of the enclosure to make it a humane enclosure for those elephants, it's going to cost us $15-$20 million," said O'Rourke.
And that's money, O'Rourke said, the city doesn't have.
