Deadly Crash Update: Authorities Identify Victim

Posted: 7:27 am MDT March 21, 2007

New Mexico State Police who are investigating a deadly car crash that blocked a portion of N.M. State Road 404, also known as the Anthony Gap, have identifed the individual who died at the scene as Francisco Velazquez of Chaparral, N.M.

State police told KFOX that Velasquez, who was driving a red 1990 Toyota pickup traveling westbound on the Anthony Gap, was passing other motorists in a no-passing zone.

They say that Velasquez then nearly collided with an eastbound vehicle. Velazquez attempted to maneuver out of the way of the oncoming vehicle. The truck then lost control and Velazquez overcorrected, which sent the vehicle into a roll.

Velazquez was the only occupant in the vehicle. Authorities pronounced him dead at the scene.

The Anthony Gap was closed for two hours Wednesday morning while the crash was investigated. The State Road has since been re-opened.
