Police Motorcycle, Police Car Collide

Posted: 6:15 pm MST March 4, 2007

Just off the El Paso Marathon route, but closed because of the marathon, the intersection of Overland and Kansas became the scene of a serious accident. That accident, which is still under investigation, involved a police car, and a police motorcycle. Apodaca Bail Bonds is located feet from where the collision took place.

"We were just sitting down, doing our work, working on some calls, and it was just kind of quiet, and we noticed there wasn't a lot of traffic coming by because they closed off the street," said Araceli Garcia, who works at Apodaca Bail Bonds.

So they were confused when they heard the distinct sound of a car accident.

"We just heard a loud thump, and like something was either scraping or skidding on the street, and we both thought, ah could it have been an accident?" said Garcia.

Garcia and her co-worker ran outside to see what all the commotion was about.

"We saw the officer on the bike that was thrown. And then we saw a female officer trying to assist him, and then we saw her also assist the driver, trying to open up the door, and the door was a little bit jammed," Garcia told KFOX.

They were shocked to see that the accident wasn't just a car versus a motorcycle, but that both were police vehicles.

"I guess a surprise to us, because we see a lot of accidents around here, but never have we seen two actually I guess police officers," said Lorrie Gallardo, who also works at Apodaca Bail Bonds.

Police said both officers were taken to the hospital, and that the motorcycle driver might have a broken leg. Both of the officers were working the marathon, and one police official KFOX spoke with said the street lights were not a factor, because the street was closed. No charges have been filed for either police officer.
