Chaparral Fire Caused By Brush Burning

February 27, 2008 -- Part of a Chaparal, N.M., home caught fire after the owner burned the grass on his back yard, according to Chaparral fire officials.
A home on Mesilla View in Chaparral sustained minimal damage to one room when a fire broke out.
"He should have done it when there's no wind, he should have had a break, or stuff to contain it," said Herant Boghosian, a nearby neighborh.
Chaparral Fire Department officials said the brush fire was out of control and spread to the home. The owner didn't want to talk to KFOX, but Boghosian said it's a danger to the neighborhood.
What doesn't help is that many properties in Chaparral have unkempt yards with a lot of dry brush. And now the conditions are just right that even a cigarette butt can start a fire.
National Weather Service officials said Southern New Mexico is under a Red Flag warning. That's issued when certain weather conditions come together such as high winds, low humidity and dryness.
"It just means that the fires will very easily get out of hand? It would be a good idea to postpone any kind of burning you need to do," said meteorologist Tim Brice.
Winds are expected to continue in the next few days and residents like Herant Boghosian hope his neighbors don't plan on doing any burning.
"These mobile homes can go up in no time at all. By the time the fire department gets over here they could be gone," said Boghosian.
