Las Cruces Family Plans Funeral Of Fallen Soldier

The family of 27-year-old Army Sgt. Matthew Apuan of the 1st Calvary Division based in Fort Hood, Texas, is planning his funeral Monday.

According to Matthew's father, Charles Apuan, the soldier was killed by insurgents on Sunday in a camp near Baghdad when he was allegedly shot in the head. However, the Department of Defense still has not confirmed his death.

"I so love my son so much, and I'm just gonna miss him so badly and I know he'll never be any older than 27," said the elder Apuan. "I don't know what it's going to be like and how long it's going to take. I know time heals but I have no idea how long that's going to be."

Sgt. Apuan first joined the Army in 2001. He would have completed his second enlistment next year.

Funeral arrangements are pending until Sgt. Apuan's body can be flown to Las Cruces.
