Report Shows Agents Lied, Covered Up Shooting

A report released Wednesday by the Department of Homeland Security sides with the prosecution in the case of two former Border Patrol agents. It describes how Ignacio Ramos and Jose Alonso Compean failed to report the shooting of suspected drug smuggler Osvaldo Aldrete-Davila, destroyed evidence, and lied to investigators. Still, the report's release did nothing to quell the effort to have Congress investigate the matter.

"I do think it's appropriate for Congress to have an oversight hearing to determine whether, in fact, that we believe all the facts have gotten out," said Sen. John Cornyn.

The growing outrage regarding the case is not just about the prosecution, but also what's taking place behind bars.

"He says he fell asleep and the next thing he was awoken by the stomping of the boots they were wearing," said Monica Ramos.

Her husband was beaten by fellow inmates Saturday night following an "America's Most Wanted" broadcast highlighting the case. Many on Capitol Hill are demanding to know how it was allowed to happen.

"Everyone's got a right to be as safe and certainly while in federal custody you would expect that they would be kept secure," said Cornyn.

With their safety now an issue, some say the president could raise his standing by giving the men their freedom.

"If he really wants to help himself, he will do what is right by these two men and their families," said Rep. Walter Jones (R-NC).

Both Ramos and Compean are serving over 10 years in federal prison on assault and obstruction charges.
