Former Federal Agent And Fugitive Captured

Early in 1994 Jose Trinida Carrillo, an Immigration and Naturalization Services agent at the time, was convicted of conspiracy to import marijuana, aiding and abetting the importation of marijuana, and bribery of a public official.

"Instead of reporting for sentencing, he was convicted and became a fugitive after that. That is why we were chasing him," said Jerry Payan, with U.S. Marshals here in El Paso.

U.S. Marshals say Carrillo spent a number of years in Mexico, making it difficult to capture him.

"We have information that he was in Mexico. We were able to get a provisional warrant request to detain him in Mexico, and extradite him back to the United States," said Payan.

By then, federal officials learned he was back here in the U.S.

"We received information that he was back in the El Paso area. With the El Paso Police Department's TAC, we set up surveillance in several locations in West El Paso," Payan told KFOX.

Despite having a weapon with him, U.S. Marshals and El Paso police officers were able to arrest Carrillo without incident early Saturday morning.

"He had with him false identifications, so he felt pretty confident that he was going to pretty much fool us, I guess. Obviously, as soon as we saw him -- we knew it was him. It makes it a very significant arrest for us. He has been in the run since 1994. With him being an ex-federal agent, it was important for us to capture him," Payan said.
