El Paso Police Investigate City's Latest Shooting

Posted: 4:00 am MST December 7, 2006

A neighborhood became the scene of a deadly shooting, and the suspect remained on the loose Thursday.

Police said just after 7 p.m. Wednesday shots were fired in the 3000 block of Frutas in South El Paso.

Jose Luis Ovide, 24, died at R.E. Thomason General Hospital as a result of injuries he sustained during the shooting.

Neighbors heard the shots and immediately called 911.

"Upon arrival officers did find a Hispanic male in his late teens to early 20s who had been a victim of gunshot wounds," said Detective Elizabeth Molina, with the El Paso Police Department.

The victim had been found inside an apartment complex.

He was taken to Thomason Hospital with serious injuries, but KFOX confirmed he died just a few hours later.

KFOX went back to the scene of the crime overnight, where several officers were still combing the area for clues.

Investigators extended the perimeter an extra two blocks after learning the victim had died from his injuries.

KFOX spoke with residents who say they're shocked a violent crime like this would happen in their own neighborhood.

"Normally it don't happen in this area. I'd expect it a little further up Dyer, but not this area. It's not normal in this area," said John Wilson, of South El Paso.

But other residents say they're not surprised since they consider the area a hotbed for gang activity.

"I have some friends who live right next to where this happened, and they say gangs are a major problem," said Ismael Ijaro, of South El Paso

Anyone with information on the shooting is asked to contact Crime Stoppers of El Paso Inc. at 566-TIPS.
