Council Pushes Back Controversial Elephant Discussion Another Nine Weeks

Posted: 6:17 pm MST December 4, 2006

It will be another nine weeks before City Council will take up the controversial elephant issue, making it more than a year since representatives first voted to do so. on Monday KFOX learned that a discussion on Juno and Savannah's future, set for Tuesday's council meeting, was pushed back again. But it is not the only time council has postponed the discussion.

Following a July 2005 KFOX investigation about alleged health issues at the elephant exhibit, council unanimously voted to keep the elephants in El Paso rather than send them to a Tennessee sanctuary. It said it would revisit the animals' future in six months.

Six months later, January 2006, council was presented two option plans to expand the exhibit. It did not vote and pushed back the discussion to a later date. But by August 2006, council still had not voted. Then, a second KFOX investigation found a new allegation of abuse involving Juno and a zoo supervisor. The supervisor was fired and some members of council asked that the future of the elephants be revisited.

But one month later, council again voted to keep the elephants in place and wait for the hiring of a new zoo director before addressing any more elephant issues. In October, Steve Marshall was hired as the new zoo director. No other decisions regarding the elephants were made.

With Monday's postponement, it will be Feb. 3 at the earliest before council takes up any discussion of Juno and Savannah's future.
