Holiday Hiring Expected To Impact Unemployment

In a couple of weeks the shelves at Target in West El Paso are expected to be practically empty, and the aisles should be packed with holiday shoppers. Store managers are forecasting over $500,000 in sales on Black Friday, which means they're going to need a lot of manpower to keep things in order.

Almost everywhere you look "for hire" signs are going up.

"We have a lot of people applying. We are doing are instant interviews for whoever wants to come in and apply," said Angela Colon, one of several Target managers. "As of right now we're looking to hire about 40 more team members," she said.

According to the Upper Rio Grande at Work, the best chance at finding a job is between October and December, or in the spring.

"Our unemployment tends to drop dramatically during these months because of all of these different companies are hiring," said Sidney Alvarez, spokesman for the Upper Rio Grande at Work.

Alvarez said the openings range from temporary to full-time or managerial positions. Most of them will be in the restaurant, transportation, and retail industries.

"When I say retail, it's not just your regular clothing stores, but you're going to see furniture stores, grocery stores, you're going to see those industries really open up their positions. It also causes kind of a trickle effect. You're going to see the restaurant industry really open up because more people tend to eat out during the holidays," said Alvarez.

Target store managers said most of the employees they hire for the holiday season end up staying and making it a permanent job.

"I needed a little extra cash as most people do, and eight years later I'm still here," said Bobby Ramirez.

If you're worried that you won't find a job this fall, "Bottom line, it's usually the employers that have a hard time filling the positions," said Alvarez.

Alvarez said it's good to question the kind of job, as in career, part-time, or something to supplement income. Accessing skills and know what will attract employers is also important. Tell others you're looking for a job because sometimes it's word of mouth that helps land a job.
