Border Patrol Agents Seek New Trial

Posted: 7:33 pm MDT October 18, 2006

On the eve of their sentencing for shooting a suspected drug smuggler, two Border Patrol agents hope to get a new trial.

Agents Ignacio Ramos and Jose Compean were found guilty in March of assault with a deadly weapon, obstruction of justice and a civil rights violation on accusations they shot the alleged drug runner and then tried to cover it up.

Their attorney, Mary Stillinger, said three of the jurors who convicted the Border Patrol agents now claim they were misled into finding the agents guilty.

It is not clear whether the judge will consider the motion before Thursday's sentencing.

Ramos and Compean could each face more than 20 years in prison.
