Storm Dumps Hail Across Dona Ana County

A fast-moving storm dumped hail on Las Cruces and several parts of Dona Ana County overnight Monday.

In less than a half-hour, the area was covered in a blanket of ice.

The last time it hailed in the area was on Sept. 14, and some residents said they weren't expecting it to happen again so soon.

"It's just really hard - a lot of hail, a lot of rain," said Jason Gutierrez, of Vado, NM.

The hail, bigger than the size of a dime, created a slushy mess overnight along several streets.

October is typically a month when severe weather is common, but forecasters said hail storms just three weeks apart is unusual.

Hail has been known for creating dangerous road conditions, leading many residents concerned for their safety.

Aaron Rigales of Las Cruces said, "I couldn't drive through here because (of) all the ice and it's really cold. The ice just covered everywhere. You can't even see the road or nothing."

There were no reports of any accidents or injures as a result of the hail.

Forecasters said Dona Ana County residents may not be in the clear quite yet. For complete weather coverage, please visit our weather section.
