Webb Attempts To Keep D'Backs Atop NL West In Finale With Dodgers

(Sports Network) - Brandon Webb tries to become the majors' first 14-game winner this afternoon when the Arizona Diamondbacks play the rubber match of their three-game series with the Los Angeles Dodgers at Chase Field.

Webb has defeated the Dodgers the last seven times he has faced them and is an impressive 9-3 lifetime against them with a 2.78 earned run average in 14 starts.

The 29-year-old sinkerballer won his last two decisions before the break and is 13-4 on the season with a 3.23 ERA. He received a no-decision last Sunday in Philadelphia, despite giving up just two runs and seven hits in a 6-3 loss.

Webb also threw a perfect inning of relief in Tuesday's All-Star Game.

Los Angeles will pin its hopes today on veteran Derek Lowe, who has won his last two starts. Lowe was brilliant against the Atlanta Braves on July 9, limiting them to a run and two hits in 7 2/3 innings, as he improved to 7-8 on the year, while lowering his earned run average to 3.85.

The Diamondbacks moved back into sole possession of first place in the NL West on Saturday, as Dan Haren threw seven innings of shutout ball, and the Diamondbacks staved off a late Dodger rally, to eke out a 3-2 win.

Haren (9-5) allowed just four hits while striking out seven and walking two batters in his time on the hill. Brandon Lyon earned his 20th save of the year despite giving up two runs on three hits in the ninth.

Conor Jackson added a solo homer, while Chad Tracy and Stephen Drew each had a hit and an RBI for the D'Backs, who are 3-3 over their last six contests.

Chad Billingsley (9-9) took the loss as he lasted 5 2/3 innings and was touched for the three runs on seven hits.

Jeff Kent hit a solo home run in the ninth, which was his 1,500th career RBI, for the Dodgers, who are 2-4 over their last six games.

Arizona has won five of its seven matchups with the Dodgers this season, including a three-game sweep in the desert back from April 7-9.
