25-year old Joseph Edward Rodriguez was with the Eighth Engineer Battalion of the First Cavalry Division.
His mother, who still resides in Las Cruces said her son was "a strong believer in the Iraqi mission."
Rodriguez is survived by a wife and child who reside in Killeen, Texas, where he will be laid to rest.
Plans are also being made for a memorial service in Las Cruces.
