A Fort Bliss soldier has been killed in action shortly before the expected birth of his son.

Relatives of Pfc. William Davis, from Grand Rapids, Mich., said they were notified over the weekend that he had died late last week.

A roadside bomb reportedly exploded beneath the Humvee he was driving.

Davis left for Iraq in November 2006 from Fort Bliss.

He was with the 2nd Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, which is part of the 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division,

He was supposed to return to Grand Rapids in a few weeks to begin two weeks of leave for his son's birth.

The fallen soldier is also survived by a 3-year-old daughter.
