Funding May Not Come To Ft. Bliss

Senator John Cornyn said in an interview with KFOX that $3.1 billion the military asked for BRAC is not in the current budget. Over $450 million of that was heading to Fort Bliss.

"This sends exactly the wrong message. Here we are at war, and one of the first things that the majority in the United States Senate proposes is to cut our defense spending," said Cornyn.

But Representative Silvestre Reyes said wait a minute, don't blame this on the Democratically controlled Congress.

"It would be better to have it done already, but we weren't able to get it done because of their failure in the last Congress," said Reyes.

Reyes said this appropriations bill was left over from the Republican controlled Congress, and they were subject to the budget that the last Congress passed. Reyes also said the money will be there later on.

"The $3.1 billion will be part of the supplemental package that the president has requested, for the war on terrorism," said Reyes.

The concern for many that we spoke with is if the money comes in a bill later this year, there won't be enough time to build the number of houses that are needed for the soldiers that are coming as a part of BRAC.

"I know that they are building more houses, and we are expecting a lot more people to come here, so definitely, we would have a shortage of housing," said Lydia Gathers, a Navy veteran.

Many Armed Forces veterans are worried about waiting for the funding.

"That's like, the check's in the mail. You know, the check's in the mail. We can say 'yeah it'll come later on', but we don't know for sure," said Gathers.

"It's something that should be done now, because why put another day what you can do right now," said Olukayode Gbolade, an Army veteran.

"It'd be nice for once, for once, to be taken care of," said Chris Henderson, an Army veteran.

Reyes said he met with Gen. Lennox, the Ft. Bliss post commander Thursday on Capitol Hill, and he said there is enough money to continue with construction on the post until the president's supplemental budget request.

Cornyn said he has an amendment to cut spending by less than 1 percent in every category except for defense, and that would be enough to bring back the $3.1 billion for BRAC. However, he told KFOX the majority leader in the senate, Harry Reid, is blocking any amendments to the appropriations bill.
