Military Identifies 5th Ft. Bliss Soldier Killed In Action

The Department of Defense announced Sunday the death of another Fort Bliss soldier who was supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Sgt. 1st Class Russell P. Borea, 38, of El Paso, Texas, died of injuries suffered in Mosul on Jan. 19 when an improvised explosive device detonated near his HMMWV during combat operations.

Borea was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Bliss, Texas.

Four Fort Bliss soldiers supporting Operation Iraqi Freedom died Monday in Mosul, Iraq.

In a news release, Fort Bliss officials said the soldiers died of wounds sustained when an improvised explosive device detonated near their Humvee during combat operations.

Killed were: Sgt. Ian C. Anderson, 22, of Prairie Village, Kan.; Sgt. John E. Cooper, 29, of Ewing, Ky.; 2nd Lt. Mark J. Daily, 23, of Irvine, Calif.; and Cpl. Matthew T. Grimm, 21, of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.

They were assigned to 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division.

Sgt. Ian C. Anderson, 22, was a M1A1 Armor Crewman (MOS 19K) assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Bliss, Texas. He entered the Army from Prairie Village, Kan., on Oct. 23, 2002.

Anderson's military education included Air Assault School.

His awards and decorations include Army Commendation Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korea Defense Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Air Assault Badge.

Anderson is survived by his wife and one child.

Sgt. John E. Cooper, 29, was an Infantryman (MOS 11B) assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Bliss, Texas. He entered the Army from Kentucky on Sep. 21, 1995.

Cooper's military education included Primary Leadership Development Course and Air Assault School.

His awards and decorations include Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korea Defense Service Medal, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Army Commendation Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Air Assault Badge.

2nd Lt. Mark Daily, 23, was an Armor officer assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Bliss, Texas. He entered the Army from Irvine, Calif. on Sep. 28, 2005.

Dailey's military education includes Scout Platoon Leaders Course, Armor Officer Basic and Airborne Courses.

His awards and decorations include Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Korea Defense Service Medal, Noncommissioned Officer Professional Development Ribbon, Army Commendation Medal, Iraq Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Air Assault Badge.

Daily is survived by his wife.

Cpl. Matthew T. Grimm, 21, was a M1A1 Armor Crewman (MOS 19K) assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Fort Bliss, Texas. He entered the Army from Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., on Sep. 14, 2004.

Grimm's awards and decorations include National Defense Service Medal and the Army Service Ribbon.

All four soldiers were posthumously awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.

A memorial ceremony in honor of soldiers will be at Sage Hall at 10 a.m. on Feb. 21.

Fort Bliss officials said there are no family members residing on Fort Bliss or in the El Paso area.
