Somebeachsomewhere Takes North America Cup At Mohawk

POSTED: 9:14 pm MDT June 14, 2008

(Sports Network) - Somebeachsomewhere. driven by Paul MacDonell, took the lead after a quarter-mile and went on to post a two-length victory in Saturday's $1.5 million North America Cup at Mohawk Racetrack.

Making only his third start of 2008, Somebeachsomewhere remained undefeated in nine career races with the North America Cup win. Trained by Brent MacGrath, the three-year-old pacer covered the one-mile in 1:49 flat.

Somebeachsomewhere, the 2007 champion two-year-old male pacer, was fourth at the start of the one-mile pace letting Mucho Sleazy take the early lead. With MacDonell once again in the sulky, Somebeachsomewhere quickly forged to the lead leaving the clubhouse turn and led the field of 10 up the backstretch.

Sent off as the 2-5 favorite, Somebeachsomewhere was never seriously challenged in winning Canada's top harness race. Finishing second was 5-1 second choice Badlands Nitro with 15-1 long shot Santana Blue Chip third.

Completing the order of finish was Mucho Sleazy, Lennon Blue Chip, Sand Shooter, Art Official, Dali, Deuce Seelster and Keystone Horatio.

Somebeachsomewhere, Badlands Nitro and Deuce Seelster were the winners of last week's three North America Cup elimination races.

"I could feel everyone behind us and supporting leading up to this week, everybody in the country. and in the United States just love this horse. He's the whole show," noted MacDonell. "Once he got to the half in 54.4, he was pretty much on air. He got the breather he needed. I just left him pace down the lane and he just loved to stretch out."

Owned by Schooner Stables, Somebeachsomewhere is perfect in three starts this year and all nine lifetime races. The win was worth $750,000 to increase the colt's lifetime earnings to more than $1.6 million.

"He raced great," MacGrath said. "He's going to have a couple of weeks now before he really does anything. I did train him a little bit this week. The money was on the line and I wanted to make sure he didn't get a little short on the end."

"He paced right through the wire. Paul drove him perfect. He wasn't worried about any track records, any Canadian records. He was worried about winning this race. Paul hasn't won this race, until tonight."

Somebeachsomewhere returned $2.80, $2.30 and $2.10. Badlands Nitro paid $4.00 and $3.30, Santanna Blue Chip paid $4.80 to show.
