Parenting: Organizing Your Child
It's not unusual for children to forget from time to time.
Like leaving their homework at school, or forgetting where they put their hairbrush.
Parents soon find out that organization is a key to success during the middle school years.
Unfortunately, developing this skill for many kids is an impossible goal.
So, should you intervene?
For 10 year old Melissa Beare, getting off to school is a frantic affair.
"Running around 'where's my shirt, where's my uniform, where are my PE clothes, what is today - do we have PE today," said Mother Missy Beare.
From keeping track of supplies to meeting a deadline, organization is a key to school success, but experts say some kids never get the hang of it.
"Chronic disorganization is a real disability, just as much as a problem with reading or math or spelling might be," said Dr. Mel Levine, a Pediatrician.
So should you do the organizing for her?
That's the question on many minds.
"A lot of mothers ask me when they can stop helping their kids get organized is there an age at which I can stop? My answer is 'no, you might have to do it forever.' There are some children who are just tremendously disorganized, and we don't want that to wipe them out as students," said Dr. Levine.
If you find that hard to believe, Parenting experts say rest assure, you can encourage your child's participation too.
Promote organization by supplying files, a calendar and other tools.
Practice time management by reviewing the week's agenda.
And consider asking the teacher to communicate deadlines directly to you, so you can help your child prioritize activities at home.
Now, here's some information that should make you take heart: Children who grow up in an organized home - even if mom or dad is doing all the organizing - develop a taste for order as they grow.
