Parenting: Choosing A Dog
![]() |
Millions of Americans share their home with man's best friend, but choosing a dog should never be a spur of the moment decision.
Kids may want a dog they can play with, but parents may have a different priority.
Mom, Kirsten Mottershead, says, "My main concern of course was a dog that didn't shed. I felt I had enough to do and I didn't need extra hair laying around the house."
Although retrievers and setters are widely thought of as good pets, animal experts say knowing your family's priorities is the key to choosing a compatible dog.
Licensed Veterinary Technician, Annette Engler, says, "It is really important to understand that you can take any good breed, what we would call a quality family pet, and turn them into the worst family pet you've ever seen. Behavior problems usually stem from poor selection based on your unique situation, they pick the wrong animal for their lifestyle."
Consider lifestyle questions like these before you choose: Is your family active or sedentary?
Is someone home during the day?
Do you have a baby or toddler?
Learn which breeds are a good match by consulting a vet or trainer.
Consider a dog's size, exercise needs, assertiveness and compatibility with kids.
And here's an important step: whether you make your selection from a breeder or a shelter, be sure to temperament test the animal before you commit.
